Working with paper—a material both familiar and versatile—paper artist Fukuda Sayumi creates expressive botanical artworks that evoke the delicate transience and vibrant energy of nature.
After studying design and art in New York, she founded Magnolia Art, an art brand dedicated to paper flowers. Today, her practice encompasses installations, window displays, and collaborations with global brands.
Through delicate handcraft techniques—cutting, layering, and assembling—Fukuda Sayumi transforms papers of diverse colors and textures into expressive botanical artworks. Balancing ephemerality with strength, delicacy with boldness, and nature with creativity, her works invite viewers to reconnect with their own emotions and memories.

Inspired by the excitement of summer’s arrival, Fukuda Sayumi expressed the warmth of clear sunlight through crisp white paper accented with vibrant yellow. Framed by seasonal botanicals such as plumeria and bird of paradise, the composition highlights the clean aesthetic of the haircare products, while the subtle color variations of Japanese paper and the carefully layered leaves create a sense of depth, freshness, and refined elegance.

August | Summer Holiday
Inspired by the carefree spirit of a summer holiday, Fukuda Sayumi created a resort-inspired beachside scene that captures the joy and excitement of self-expression through hair color. Playful elements such as crabs, seashells, and a beach ball evoke the uplifting feeling of summer and reflect the fun of experimenting with color. Crafted primarily from Japanese “Mermaid” paper, known for its subtle texture, the composition combines dimensional paper constructions with carefully cast shadows to create depth and realism. While the crab motif adds a touch of whimsy, the folded seashells showcase the unique characteristics of paper, resulting in a refined miniature world that feels imaginative rather than overly literal.
