What causes frizz?

Frizz typically affects hair strands with a distorted shape or uneven distribution of the Cortex.

Everyone’s hair can get frizzy even if it’s straight. People with straight and natural curly hair tend to notice it most when their hair is damaged, dry, or when it’s super-hot or humid outside.

Cortex cells are composed of 2 types of cells: Para-like Cortex and Ortho-like Cortex. These cells are evenly distributed in straight hair, but unevenly distributed in curly hair. In addition to the difference in shape from the time the hair grows, uneven distribution of the Cortex also appears as a characteristic of curly hair.

All of this can cause breakage, tangling, and split ends — making your hair look dry, dull, and frizzy.

At a microscopic level, frizzy and damaged hair has undergone excessive weathering that’s worn down the outermost layers of your hair shaft, known as the cuticle. Once this is removed, the inner layer is exposed, which can lead to hair breakage. In other words, having frizzy tresses is a sign of major hair damage that has compromised the structure of your hair strands and stripped its hydration away.

What happens when hair frizzes?

Hair cuticles are made up of little scales that protect the hair strands. When examined under a microscope, a healthy cuticle lays down smooth, like the scales of a fish. Beneficial moisture from natural oils produced by your scalp help keep those scales down in healthy hair.

But as hair becomes dry and damaged, its appearance resembles a pine cone: open, rough and prickly. When it’s open and damaged like this, beneficial moisture can escape the hair shaft while moisture from the air enters the hair shaft, causing it to swell and change shape. In other words, it becomes frizzy.
